Abbandonato in mezzo al deserto mezzo morto, senza viveri né soldi dai due compari Bowen e Taggart, l'anziano cercatore d'oro Cable Hogue sopravvie miracolosmanete grazie all'imprevisto ritrovamento di una sorgente d'acqua. Adibita la sorgente a stazione per le diligenze di passaggio, Hogue scopre che l'affare rende meglio dell'oro. Fa amicizia con il vagabondo Joshua e si innamora della prostituta Hildy. Così, quando tre anni dopo i comapri tornano per derubarlo di nuovo, è pronto a consumare la sua vendetta.
