Neverland - Un sogno per la vita (Finding Neverland) è un film del 2004 diretto da Marc Forster ed interpretato da Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet e Dustin Hoffman. La pellicola è stata presentata fuori concorso alla 61ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia.
L'opera narra in maniera sufficientemente fedele un periodo della vita dello scrittore James Matthew Barrie, l'autore di Peter Pan. Il film è anche un viaggio nel sogno verso Neverland, ovvero in italiano l'Isola che non c'è.
Il film è stato candidato a diversi Oscar, tra cui Miglior film, Miglior sceneggiatura non originale e Miglior attore per quanto riguarda l'interpretazione di Johnny Depp nel ruolo di J.M. Barrie. Il film ha ricevuto un Oscar per la Miglior colonna sonora di Jan Andrzej Pawe? Kaczmarek.

Il film ha per protagonista James Matthew Barrie (Johnny Depp), un apprezzato autore teatrale, all’eterna ricerca dell’originalità e dell’ispirazione che sembra non riuscire più a ricreare nelle sue rappresentazioni. Il suo agente, Charles Frohman (Dustin Hoffman) lo esorta a cambiare il suo stile, dal momento che gli incassi al botteghino si fanno sempre meno consistenti e il pubblico lascia la sala profondamente annoiato.
A casa Barrie, intanto, James vive una profonda crisi con sua moglie Mary Ansell (Radha Mitchell) che è molto distaccata e fredda nei suoi confronti.
Un giorno l’uomo si reca al parco in cerca di ispirazione, imbattendosi casualmente nella famiglia Davies, composta dalla bella madre Sylvia (Kate Winslet) e dai suoi quattro figli: George, Michael, Jack e Peter (Freddie Highmore). Quest’ultimo, nonostante la giovanissima età, ha perso tutta la sua spensieratezza dopo l’improvvisa morte del padre. A differenza dei suoi fratelli, infatti, Peter ha interiorizzato questo profondo dolore e non riesce a sfogarsi.
James prende molto a cuore la felicità dei quattro bambini e decide di invitare tutta la famiglia Davies nel suo cottage in campagna. Così facendo, tuttavia, l’uomo finirà con lo scatenare l’ira di sua moglie, che lo accusa di trascurarla continuamente. La vicinanza con i bambini, per i quali nutre un sincero affetto, ispirerà a James una nuova e originale opera teatrale. La commedia è un vero e proprio successo e il pubblico lo acclama.
Sylvia, tuttavia, si ammala e James dovrà decidere se l’affetto che prova per i fratelli Davies valga lo sforzo di diventare, finalmente, un adulto responsabile.
