In un campo vicino al New Jersey, una colonia di pipistrelli viene attaccata da alcuni insetti parassiti che trasformano i mammiferi volanti in micidiali creature che, al minimo rumore, attaccano chiunque capiti loro a tiro. L'adolescente Ally e la sua famiglia diventano presto il bersaglio dei mostriciattoli ma, grazie ai sensi molto sviluppati della ragazza, riescono a fuggire a un primo attacco cercando salvezza nella foresta. Il bosco però offre solo una protezione limitata: la famiglia deve vivere in completo silenzio. Nel caos che minaccia la loro esistenza, capiranno anche che gli esseri umani sanno diventare pericolosi quando si tratta di vita e di morte.
