Sfida al Presidente è una miniserie del nominato all'Oscar Billy Ray (Captain Phillips: Attacco in mare aperto) incentrata sulla lotta di potere tra il 45° Presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America Donald Trump e l'ex direttore dell'FBI James Comey. Basato su A Higher Loyalty, il controverso libro di memorie scritto dallo stesso Comey, il drama politico in due parti racconta dal punto di vista di quest'ultimo le vicende che portarono al suo allontanamento dal Bureau per mano di Trump, fortemente critico nei confronti della sua gestione di inchieste politicamente incendiarie come l'Email-gate contro Hillary Clinton prima e il Russiagate che lo coinvolgeva in prima persona poi. Interpretati rispettivamente da Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) e Brendan Gleeson (Mr. Mercedes), James Comey e Donald Trump sono ritratti come due personaggi estremamente potenti le cui personalità, etiche e lealtà sorprendentemente diverse li hanno messi in rotta di collisione.
La prima parte esamina le fasi iniziali del Russiagate e l'indagine dell'FBI sulle e-mail di Hillary Clinton e il loro impatto decisivo sulle Elezioni del 2016, quando Donald Trump stupì il mondo con la sua elezione a Presidente. La seconda, invece, è il racconto della problematica relazione tra Comey e Trump e si concentra sui primi mesi - intensi e caotici - della presidenza del Tycoon. Un viaggio da insider tra i corridoi del potere, dove le azioni dei vari personaggi fanno la carriera di alcuni, distruggono la carriera di altri e contribuiscono a plasmare l'incendiario clima politico in cui gli Stati Uniti si sono ritrovati dopo il 2016.
Nella miniserie recitano anche Holly Hunter (Lezioni di piano) nel ruolo dell'ex ministra della giustizia ad interim Sally Yates, uno dei tanti silurati da Tump; Michael Kelly (House of Cards) dell'ex vicedirettore dell'FBI Andrew McCabe; la vincitrice del Tony Jennifer Ehle di Patrice Comey, la moglie di James; Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul) dell'ex direttore dell'Intelligence Nazionale James Clapper; Kingsley Ben-Adir (Peaky Blinders) dell'ex Presidente Barack Obama; Peter Coyote (Law & Order: LA) di Robert Mueller, nominato dal Dipartimento di Giustizia procuratore speciale dell'inchiesta giudiziaria; T.R. Knight (Grey's Anatomy) dell'ex Capo dello Staff della Casa Bianca Reince Priebus; e Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire) dell'ex vice procuratore generale Rod Rosenstein.
