Nonostante molti cambiamenti nel corso degli anni, Chicago è rimasta fedele alla sua identità di rock band indipendente con i fiati. I loro primi tre album, tutti set di due dischi, presentavano una vasta gamma di influenze jazz, pop e progressive, spesso con testi politici. Ma avevano anche un talento per i singoli di successo concisi e "Make Me Smile" degli anni '70 iniziò una lunga serie di successi in classifica. La morte accidentale del chitarrista Terry Kath nel 1978 ha quasi finito la band, ma sono rimbalzati negli anni '80 con un approccio più fluido e pesantemente ballato. Anche dopo la partenza del cantante/bassista Peter Cetera nel 1985, sono rimasti una delle principali attrazioni dal vivo.
