New York, 1985. A Wall Street l'unica cosa che conta è il potere del denaro. Giovani e rampanti yuppies laureati nelle business schools più prestigiose del mondo, speculano in borsa con l'unico obiettivo di guadagnare molto e subito. Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) (per gli amici Buddy) è un brillante ed anonimo broker pronto a tutto per raggiungere la gloria.
"La vita si condensa in pochi attimi", questo è il motto di Buddy e quando l'occasione gli si presenta non se la lascia sfuggire. Il suo destino cambierà drasticamente dopo l'incontro con il cinico e spregiudicato finanziere d'assalto Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), idolo dei "ragazzi" di Wall Street.
"Gekko il grande", lo squalo del New York Stock Exchange, non si fermerà davanti a niente e a nessuno per raggiungere il suo scopo: "fare soldi" e molto presto il giovane broker capirà con chi ha a che fare, arrivando a utilizzare ogni mezzo illecito per preservare lo status sociale che ha faticosamente acquisito lavorando per Gekko.
Molto presto il giovane broker capirà che come in borsa ad immense fortune guadagnate in poche ore si susseguono rovinosi fallimenti, anche nella vita di Buddy alla sua avidità seguirà la rovina.
