Il film comincia a raccontare la vita di una pigra cittadina caraibica, Las Piedras, ma di esotico e solare non c'è nulla: è un paese martoriato dalla fame e dalla peste, rifugio di criminali, nullafacenti in cerca di fortuna o di un appiglio per fare soldi.
All'ombra del grande impero petrolifero americano, sfruttatore feroce dei diseredati e dei miserabili per i lavori più pericolosi, a Las Piedras si aspetta la grande occasione. Quattro sbandati avventurieri si trovano lì: i francesi Mario (Yves Montand) e Mr. Jo (Charles Vanel), l'italiano Luigi (Folco Lulli) e lo scandinavo Bimba (Peter van Eyck). Questi vengono ingaggiati per trasportare due camion carichi di nitroglicerina.
Non hanno niente da perdere e il salario è di duemila dollari a testa, grazie ai quali potranno tornare a casa. Il tragitto però è molto lungo e le strade dissestate: devono raggiungere una zona desertica del Guatemala, dove un incendio sta divorando il più ricco pozzo di petrolio della Southern Oil Company e con l'esplosivo devono domare le fiamme.
Il viaggio è pericoloso, estenuante, pieno di imprevisti, un vero e proprio incubo che mette a nudo le personalità dei quattro: incoscienti, traditori, violenti, bugiardi, crudeli e vigliacchi. Lo spirito di sopravvivenza li guiderà verso il pozzo, su strade dove ad ogni curva c'è una prova da superare...
