È il primo film aderente al manifesto Dogma 95 (nonostante infranga una delle regole del manifesto, che vuole che tutto sia naturale e di proprietà degli attori, in quanto un abito è stato acquistato apposta per il film; il regista, tuttavia, dichiara la violazione all'inizio del film), anche se è uscito contemporaneamente a Idioti di Lars von Trier.

È la tipica festa di famiglia quella che riunisce tutti i Klingenfeldt in un castello di campagna per festeggiare il sessantesimo compleanno del patriarca. Fra i suoi figli, Christian è arrivato apposta dalla Francia, dove dirige una catena di ristoranti, Michael scopre solo all'ultimo momento di non essere stato invitato ed Helene, poco prima di cena, trova nella sua stanza una traccia che la conduce all'ultima lettera scritta da sua sorella suicidatasi l'anno precedente. Amici e parenti sono tutti raccolti intorno alla tavola imbandita, ma la festa, già carica di tensione, si trasforma in una vera tragedia quando Christian prende la parola per rivelare a tutti le odiose violenze di cui si è macchiato suo padre in passato...
