Sebbene sia conosciuto in gran parte come scrittore di nuove canzoni, grazie a successi come "Dang Me", "Chug-A-Lug" e "England Swings", Roger Miller è stato in realtà uno dei migliori cantautori country degli anni '60 e gli anni '70, e un'influenza importante sul movimento progressista del paese. Unendo il country con il jazz, il blues e il pop, ha utilizzato insoliti dispositivi armonici e ritmici nella sua sofisticata canzone, creando gemme senza tempo e ampiamente coperte ("King of the Road", "Husbands and Wives") che sono state affrontate da tutti, da Dean Martin a Giant Sand. Negli anni '80 ha scritto le canzoni per il musical di Broadway Big River, che è andato in scena per oltre 1.000 spettacoli e ha vinto sette Tony Awards.
