Tenet, il film diretto da Christopher Nolan, è ambientato nel mondo dello spionaggio internazionale, dove le nazioni si uniscono, al di là dei loro interessi, per risolvere un enigmatico intrigo. Al Protagonista (John David Washington), un agente ben addestrato e molto sensibile, viene assegnato un importante compito: fermare quella che potrebbe rivelarsi come un'apocalisse planetaria, una minaccia peggiore dell'Armageddon. Ma in questa ardua missione non sarà solo, in suo aiuto accorrerà un partner (Robert Pattinson) e sua vecchia conoscenza.
L'unico modo per salvare il mondo sembra essere racchiuso in una misteriosa parola, Tenet. Per fronteggiare la minaccia globale, infatti, i due agenti speciali dovranno svolgere le loro azioni in qualcosa al di là del tempo reale e dovranno essere in grado di attuare una manipolazione temporale, nota come inversione. Non si tratta di un viaggio nel tempo, ma di un’alterazione del flusso, che apporta una deviazione del corso naturale cose. L’inversione è l’idea della materia con una sua entropia invertita, quindi attraversa il tempo in senso inverso, relativamente a noi. È un’arma a doppio taglio, perché se impiegata su larga scala potrebbe diventare una forma di terrorismo e allo stesso tempo è il mezzo più efficace che il Protagonista e il suo partner hanno per salvare l’umanità ed evitare una terza guerra mondiale.
