La storia ruota intorno al giovane Jen (un Gelfling, creature un tempo dominanti del pianeta, simili a Elfi) che crede di essere l'ultimo della sua specie, poiché da piccolo i suoi genitori e il suo popolo furono sterminati dai Garthim (grosse creature nere simili a Granchi, al servizio dei Skeksis). Jen fu quindi cresciuto ed educato dai Mistici, fino al giorno della morte del suo maestro, che prima di spirare, confida a Jen che lui è il prescelto che deve trovare il frammento del Cristallo della Verità e riparare il Cristallo Nero dei Skeksis.
