Gustav, also known as Gustavus, (Hungarian Gusztáv, 1964-1977 ) was Hungarian series of animated short cartoons (5 minutes) for adults. It was extremely popular in Eastern Europe, where it has achieved cult status.
Each episode tells an adventure of the main character, Gustav, related to the gray realities of urban life. Characteristic feature of the show was that episodes were independent: for example, Gustav is sometimes a bachelor, sometimes has large family. In Eastern Europe and Yugoslavia the episodes were broadcast on TV in the 80s, usually as airtime filler. The series was also broadcast in Western Europe and even in New Zealand - because it was not using language, other than gibberish sound, it was able to easily transcend boundaries.

Gustavo, infatti, altro non è che il piccolo abitante di una piccola realtà ristretta, fatta di orizzonti limitati, egoismi e odi privati, idiosincrasie, fissazioni, frustrazioni e superstizioni, portata allo stato dell'arte dalla Pannonia Film (la stessa che negli anni 80 lanciò
La famiglia Mezil), lo studio di cinema d'animazione ungherese che tanti capolavori ha regalato al disegno animato europeo.
La storia è quella di una vita da gregario (non a caso in ungherese la serie è sottotitola "a társas lény", ossia "l'uomo che segue", l'eterno secondo), ma senza i misconosciuti eroismi cantanti da Ligabue. E
Gustavo è infatti il protagonista ormai mitico e mitizzato di una serie di cartoni animati di breve durata (circa 5 minuti a episodio): la prima serie (68 episodi, fra il 1964 e il 1968 ) fu creata per il grande schermo, la seconda (52 episodi, fra il 1975 e il 1977 ) proprio per la televisione. La prima apparizione, però, la fece nel 1961 su un fumetto di Jozsef Nepp, intitolato "Passione".
Senza dialoghi, corredata da una musichetta trapanante e ossessiva quanto geniale tormentone (sfido chiunque a dimenticarsene),
Gustavo divenne presto un grandissimo successo internazionale in oltre 70 Paesi, dall'Ungheria all'Italia, dalla Germania alla Nuova Zelanda e persino negli USA, dove molti 50enni lo riconoscono come il primo cartone animato di cui hanno limpido ricordo. Prima ancora di Mickey Mouse!
Quel che sopravvive/What remains
Purtroppo, dei 120 episodi originari (quasi tutti trasmessi anche dalla RAI) ne restano soltanto 51, che parecchi anni fa La Pannonia Film riuscì a pubblicare in 3 dvd, da molto tempo ormai fuori catalogo. Di ciò che manca non esiste più traccia...
Come se non bastasse, ho saputo dell'esistenza di questa pubblicazione soltanto dopo l'esaurimento delle copie. Sono così stato costretto a ricorrere a un amico inglese che, ai tempi, aveva condiviso in rete i divx dei vari episodi... Si tratta quindi di un found, quindi: ma, purtroppo, è tutto quello che c'è e, a ben guardare, non è neppure troppo male.
In questa release trovate il contenuto del primo dvd. Ho lasciato i titoli in ungherese e in inglese, non provando neppure a ricordarmi quale titolo avrebbero potuto avere in italiano, se mai l'hanno avuto. Magari a qualcuno verranno in mente, così come verrà in mente tutto ciò che purtroppo manca e che, molto presumibilmente, non avremo mai più. Ma accontentiamoci: è già tantissimo!
[i]The first series (68 episodes) was made between 1964 and 1968 for silver screen. The second series (52 episodes) was made between 1975 and 1977 for TV. Pannonia Film Studio produced the series. The main character, Gustav, had a precursor in 1961, in 8 minute cartoon Passion by Nepp József, in which the main character tries to quit smoking. Trio of well respected and award winning authors, Dargay-Nepp-Jankovics, was responsible for the development of the quirky show.
In Hungary, only 51 episodes were released on DVD: they are present in these 3 PACKS.
